Made in Canada: Addicus
Get Set Games was recently formed by a number of talented Toronto game developers, and Rob Segal. i met most of these fellas through TOJam, an annual create-a-game-in-a-weekend expo, which i maintain is the lifeblood of the indie game industry here in the Big Smoke. At the second TOJam, these guys were responsible for a run n’ gun game slandering the good name of televangelist Benny Hinn. The next year, they followed up with a Rock Band drum-controlled (and gorgeously illustrated) pirate game, and topped THAT with a very nice-looking monster swarm title the next year. One of those monsters is peeking out from the top of their new website, and i heart it.

I’m attracted by the smooth, round tops of the Addicus mushrooms (and of Rob Segal)
The team’s first iPhone release is not the adorable monster game we were hoping for, but rather an educational game called Addicus that’s more fun than it ought to be, thanks to some cheerful music and simple but eye-popping graphics. Now at the best of times, i find math as enjoyable as a swift kick to the babymaker by a woman in high heels, and Addicus is no exception. Some players may enjoy being asked to do simple arithmetic under the gun while a relentless timer ticks away and primary-coloured mushrooms throb at them excitedly, but it brought me back to my grade two class where Mrs. Hogan would make us do “minute math”, sans mushrooms, and the pressure was so hard to bear that at the tender age of eight, i could only cope by taking mushrooms.
1+1 = $2.99
The game’s $2.99 price point is a little over-reaching – in order to justify the cost, i would have liked to have seen stages and levels and some kind of progression chart to make me FEEL like i was getting somewhere, rather than the inevitable FAILURE screen when i fall short of figuring out that 8 + 1 + 1 is 10. Still, i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again (and again and again): games are worth money. i will gladly pay to be entertained by them. The way i look at it, i’m giving the lads at Get Set Games my hard-earned cash to help them make the game in the future that i know i’ll enjoy (HINT, fells: adorable monsters). This is one team you’ll definitely want to keep on your radar, and i think players should fund developers they believe in.
If you are nervous about ponying up the equivalent cost of a tall latte at Starbucks for the game, have a look at this actual video of Addicus gameplay* to see if it might be your kettle of fish:

Save Me a Three Dollar Bill
The gents at Get Set Games were good enough to provide us with a few FREE CODES for Addicus. Remember: they’re Canadian, the game is Canadian, and YOU might be Canadian, but the codes will only work on a US iTunes account:
Dear Apple re: Free App Codes:
Fix this shit up in here.
Sincerely,
Untold Entertainment Inc.
If you use a code, let us know and we’ll cross it off the list to save other readers from wasting their time (although, if you’re reading this site, i daresay you’ve wasted enough time already. Go cure cancer or something.) And be decent enough to pop back in and post a review on our What Are You Playing? forum.
